On the one hand, work was carried out on the section of pipeline in the riverbed of the Möhne that had been washed free in the course of various flood events. Additional protection against water pressure and floating debris was achieved by additionally encasing the section of pipeline and placing natural stone in the riverbed. On the other hand, an additional valve was installed around 1.5 kilometres to the north on the same pipeline. This shut-off device makes it possible to minimise the impact on the downstream supply area in the event of damage to the section of the pipeline that has been flushed free.
In addition, a temporary pipeline connection was installed in Sundern-Hövel, west of Melschede Castle. Here, two existing natural gas pipelines were connected to create a "bypass", i.e. an alternative supply route.
an alternative supply route.
Once these measures have been completed, it will be technically ensured that the regional gas supply can be maintained even if the exposed pipeline is damaged. In addition, the prerequisite
to be able to implement a permanent repair or re-laying of the affected pipeline section at the beginning of 2025. Thyssengas is already liaising with the relevant authorities and municipalities on this.
