Sustainability
Thinking about tomorrow.
We are changing to enable change.
Yes, it's true: Today, we still largely transport fossil natural gas through our pipeline network, which is around 4,400 kilometres long. Natural gas has been a central pillar of the German energy mix for decades and will remain so for the time being as a bridge until renewable energies are fully integrated. But the days of natural gas are numbered. We recognised these developments early on. We are not holding on to natural gas, but are focussing on a future with hydrogen, biogas and other green gases.
The challenge here is that we have to do one thing without abandoning the other. However, the existence of two systems - one for natural gas and one for hydrogen - also means increasing complexity in planning, construction, operation and maintenance, which poses challenges for us as a company. We are undergoing profound change as a result and for this reason: this is nothing less than the most comprehensive transformation in our company's history. This process will take time and will not be accomplished without contradictions and obstacles. But the direction is clear and we are moving forward - step by step up the stairway to the future.
Our key figures
>> Sustainability report from p. 28
We have been reporting transparently on our activities since 2021 and have been working on improving our sustainability performance ever since. To this end, we are using an increasingly systematic approach to recording a large number of key figures. In preparation for reporting in accordance with the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), we introduced a digital KPI management system at the end of 2024, which we are now continuously developing. Here is an insight:
Our structures
and contact persons
Sustainability is a joint task and is firmly anchored as a field of action in our corporate strategy. Creating added value for the environment, our employees and society therefore has more and more faces at our company and is increasingly changing the way we work together. With this in mind, we formalised our governance structure in 2024 by adopting a sustainability guideline and created incentives to ensure that sustainability is practised in all areas of our company. We are proud of the many employees who are driving the issue forward throughout the company.
Our sustainability officers, Henrik Schultz-Brunn and Timm Dominik, act as a coordinating link between sustainability strategy development and its operational implementation. They are responsible for the internal and external communication of sustainability activities, develop solutions together with the experts in the respective areas, provide impetus and bring about company-wide policy decisions. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact our sustainability officers.
