Biogas
A versatile component of a sustainable energy supply
Biogas is already making a valuable contribution to climate protection today, as unlike fossil fuels, its combustion is climate-neutral. When processed into biomethane, it can be easily fed into the gas grid, making use of existing infrastructure. Being almost identical to fossil natural gas, biomethane is a direct substitute for existing gas applications and, as a so-called drop-in option, saves on additional investment in costly retrofitting.
For this reason, the transport of biomethane is a key component in the transformation of the energy supply for a sustainable future.
A sustainable energy system is not dependent on a single resource, but is resilient thanks to the diversification of energy sources. Thanks to the diverse generation options for biomethane, the varying biomethane potentials of European countries are linked across borders via existing transmission networks. This generates numerous sales opportunities on the supply side and diversified procurement options on the consumer side, helping to establish an energy supply that is resilient to price shocks.
Production and Feed-in
Biomethane can be produced from a wide variety of sources. It is largely produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic material in the absence of air, or increasingly through thermal gasification. In addition to selecting feedstocks that meet the European Union’s sustainability criteria, an efficient grid connection for feeding into the gas network is essential for a sustainable business model. Only in this way can a sustainable, regionally produced and storable energy source become an energy carrier that can be marketed within the European single market.
