A versatile building block for energy supply
Biogas can replace fossil natural gas and thus, already now, contribute to decarbonisation. When processed as biomethane - biogas upgraded to natural gas quality specifications -, it can be fed into the existing gas grid. Biomethane can replace fossil natural gas in existing gas applications. As a drop-in option, it can as well reduce the need for additional technical retrofitting.
The transportation of biomethane is a key component for a diversified energy supply. At the same time, as a substitute for fossil natural gas, biomethane can contribute to decarbonisation.
A diversified energy mix contributes to the resilience of the energy system. Thanks to the wide range of biomethane production options, the varying biomethane potentials of European countries are linked across borders via the existing transmission networks. This creates numerous sales opportunities for producers and diversified supply options for consumers, helping to establish an energy supply system that is resilient to price shocks.
Production and Feed-in
Biomethane can be produced from various organic raw materials, such as, slurry, manure, plant residues or organic waste. It is largely produced through the anaerobic digestion of organic material in the absence of air, or increasingly through thermal gasification. Besides selecting feedstocks that meet the European Union’s sustainability criteria, for a future-proof business model it is essential to have an efficient grid connection for feeding them into the gas grid. This is the only way that a regionally produced and storable energy source can become an energy carrier that may be marketed within the European single market, that is able to replace fossil natural gas and, thus, contribute to decarbonisation.
