Thyssengas opens new operating centre in Recklinghausen with comprehensive sustainability concept

Yesterday, Tuesday (26 August 2025), transmission system operator Thyssengas opened its new operations centre in Recklinghausen - creating the best conditions for actively shaping the energy supply of tomorrow. The new building has been awarded DGNB certification for sustainable construction.

The new site on Sibylla-Merian-Strasse is now home to more than 50 Thyssengas employees. From there, they will work on the operation and maintenance of the Thyssengas pipeline network, thus ensuring a secure gas supply in the region. The site will also be responsible for part of the hydrogen network that is being built.

The new operating centre meets high sustainability standards: the building is heated and cooled using an ice energy storage system, electricity is supplied by a photovoltaic system and rainwater is collected using a multi-stage system. The planting on the roofs, façades and throughout the site promotes a good climate and provides a habitat for insects. The building thus achieves the gold standard of the DGNB certification, an internationally recognised system for assessing sustainable buildings.

"As a transmission system operator, we rely on hydrogen and other green gases as key technologies for the energy transition," says Dr Thomas Becker, Commercial Director of Thyssengas. "Our commitment to shaping a sustainable future has also guided us in the construction of the new operating centre. I would like to thank everyone who made this project possible - especially our project manager and his team, the companies involved and the city of Recklinghausen."

The new building replaces the old site on Blitzkuhlenstraße in Recklinghausen. The city thus continues to be a central hub for energy supply in the Ruhr region. Deputy Mayor Marita Bergmaier emphasises: "We are delighted to have companies like Thyssengas GmbH here in Recklinghausen. A great commitment to the region, of which we are very proud."

Thyssengas celebrated the opening of the new site together with representatives from politics, business and the media as well as the workforce at the Recklinghausen site. The guests were given a tour of the approximately 7,500 m2 site, the workshop and the warehouse.

About Thyssengas

Thyssengas GmbH is a German transmission system operator. The company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021, is headquartered in Dortmund. Thyssengas operates a gas network around 4,400 kilometres long - mostly in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also with individual pipelines in Lower Saxony. It supplies downstream distribution network operators as well as industrial companies and power plants. Thyssengas is focussing on hydrogen as a gaseous energy source for a climate-neutral future. The Dortmund-based network operator is involved in numerous initiatives to this end. At the same time, it is making targeted investments in the conversion of its pipeline system to enable a rapid hydrogen ramp-up as part of the energy transition. The company currently employs around 550 people at seven locations in the grid area, and the number is growing.
