Voerde-Walsum hydrogen pipeline: Thyssengas is preparing the planning approval process for a new hydrogen pipeline in the Lower Rhine region and is organising public consultation events

The transmission system operator Thyssengas is developing a key transport route in the Lower Rhine region for the hydrogen supply of the future: plans are in place to construct an approximately eight-kilometre-long hydrogen pipeline between Voerde and Duisburg-Walsum, which is due to come into operation at the end of 2027.

The new pipeline forms part of Germany’s nationwide hydrogen backbone network. By connecting to the central transport corridor from the Netherlands, the region gains a forward-looking supply outlook – for industry as well as for small and medium-sized enterprises and distribution network operators.

In mid-2024, the relevant authority confirmed that a spatial impact assessment would not be required. The project team is now preparing the planning approval process, which is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025.

When implementing its pipeline construction projects, Thyssengas relies on proactive and personal dialogue with local authorities, government bodies and the public. In July, the company is organising two public information sessions for the Voerde-Walsum hydrogen pipeline.

The events offer all interested parties the opportunity to gain an overview of the current planning for the project and to engage in conversation with Thyssengas experts at the themed discussion areas. The dialogue events will take place on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, 08/07/25 from 6 pm at the Kathrin-Türks-Halle (Althoffstraße 2, 46535 Dinslaken)
  • Wednesday, 9 July 2025 from 6 pm at the Kathrin-Türks-Halle (Althoffstraße 2, 46535 Dinslaken)

No registration is required and refreshments will be provided.
