Thyssengas and Gelsenwasser cooperate on hydrogen: Letters of intent signed for H2 connection for large network area in NRW

Hydrogen (H2) is seen as a key energy source of the future. Its widespread use will contribute to security of supply in Germany and accelerate the decarbonisation of industry and SMEs. In order to enable a broad-based H2 supply in North Rhine-Westphalia, the planned hydrogen long-distance pipeline network of Thyssengas is to be coupled with the distribution network of GELSENWASSER Energienetze.

With the signing of the Letters of Intent, Dr Arne Dammer, Head of Strategy and Innovation at Thyssengas, and Dr Carsten Leder, Head of Sales at Thyssengas, together with the management of GELSENWASSER Energienetze GmbH, Christian Creutzburg and Thilo Augustin, lay the foundation for H2 supply in several areas of North Rhine-Westphalia:

  • in the Münsterland region,
  • in the Lower Rhine region with the three focal points
    • Isselburg,
    • Kalkar, Uedem, Kevelaer, Sonsbeck, Geldern, Issum, Rheurdt and Kaarst as well as
    • Xanten, Alpen, Voerde and Rheinberg.

Thyssengas will provide hydrogen transport to the regions with its H2 pipeline network. GELSENWASSER Energienetze will then assume the role of local network operator and ensure that the hydrogen is distributed to the consumers located in the regions.

"The memorandum of understanding signed today makes it clear once again that our hydrogen infrastructure is becoming increasingly relevant. Together with Gelsenwasser Energienetze, we are taking another step towards the hydrogen ramp-up. We are thinking beyond the H2 core network as phase 1, because with this partnership Thyssengas is once again demonstrating that the second phase of the market ramp-up with the transition to the integrated network development plan for gas and hydrogen is already a reality and that we have long been preparing the distribution of hydrogen to consumers," says Dr Arne Dammer, Head of Strategy and Innovation at Thyssengas. "This creates planning and investment security for a large number of industrial and SME customers from North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the most important industrial locations in Germany."

Christian Creutzburg, Managing Director of GELSENWASSER Energienetze, emphasises: "We want to provide our industrial customers and the municipalities in which we already operate gas infrastructure with pipeline-based hydrogen in the future. We are actively helping to shape the market ramp-up and it is important to take these concrete steps now so that companies and municipalities know what they can plan for when transforming processes and heat supply."

Hydrogen requirements in North Rhine-Westphalia

Thyssengas has identified regional H2 clusters on the basis of market surveys. The planned grid interconnection points on the Lower Rhine and in Münsterland will reach numerous energy-intensive companies. The conversion to green hydrogen paves the way for sustainable transformation. Further information on the Thyssengas H2 strategy and the specific plans: https://h2.thyssengas.com/

About Thyssengas

Thyssengas GmbH is a German transmission system operator. The company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021, is headquartered in Dortmund. Thyssengas operates a gas network around 4,400 kilometres long - mostly in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also with individual pipelines in Lower Saxony. It supplies downstream distribution network operators as well as industrial companies and power plants. Thyssengas is focussing on hydrogen as a gaseous energy source for a climate-neutral future. The Dortmund-based network operator is involved in numerous initiatives to this end. At the same time, it is making targeted investments in the conversion of its pipeline system to enable a rapid hydrogen ramp-up as part of the energy transition. The company currently employs around 460 people at seven locations in the network area, and the number is growing.

About Gelsenwasser

All life comes from water - that's how Gelsenwasser came about! Founded in 1887 in the Ruhr area to supply the coal and steel industry and the people of the region with water, we are now one of Germany's largest water supply companies. Resource conservation is very important to us. Our logo has reflected this orientation for 50 years: The blue river in a green landscape symbolises the sustainable, responsible management of resources - this applies to all business areas. Infrastructure and supply are our focal points: from water and wastewater to energy (gas, electricity, wind, PV, heat), digital and industrial parks (life science, chemicals) to the circular economy (sewage sludge incineration plus phosphorus recycling). We also share our expertise with our partners as services or in joint projects.
