Thyssengas invests in the energy supply of tomorrow: ground-breaking ceremony for new operating centre in Recklinghausen

The ground-breaking ceremony by Mayor Christoph Tesche, City of Recklinghausen, and Dr Thomas Gößmann, Chairman of the Management Board of Thyssengas, marks the official start of construction of the new operations centre today. Around 1,500 kilometres of the Thyssengas pipeline network are currently controlled, monitored and maintained from the Recklinghausen site. In future, the operations centre will also look after Thyssengas' emerging hydrogen network in the region. The new building creates the right conditions for this.

The new operations centre is being built on the approximately 7,500 m² site on Sibylla-Merian-Straße in Recklinghausen. From this location, around 50 employees will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Thyssengas pipeline network and thus the secure supply of gas to the region. They will also be responsible for one of the central pieces of the puzzle of the planned hydrogen core network: the first cross-border hydrogen pipeline from Kalle in North Rhine-Westphalia to Vlieghuis in the Netherlands.

In his welcoming address, Dr Gößmann also emphasised the special relationship between Thyssengas and the Ruhr region: "Thyssengas is on the way to a new chapter in the company's more than 100-year history. Hydrogen and other green gases will characterise the future. Our mission is clear: we are shaping the energy transition and, with our networks, will enable an energy supply without fossil fuels for the industrial location of North Rhine-Westphalia and beyond. As a child of the Ruhr region, a secure gas supply for the region was, is and will remain part of our identity - which is why we are building a new and larger operating centre here in Recklinghausen."

"I am delighted that a successful company like Thyssengas is making a publicly visible and proactive commitment to Recklinghausen as a business location," says Mayor Christoph Tesche. "The expansion of the pipeline network and the creation of new jobs create ideal conditions for growth and success. The new location will open up new technologies in the field of energy supply."

The new operating centre is scheduled to open in the first half of next year. In addition to modern workplaces and extensive technical equipment for the organisation of grid operations, the topic of sustainability is high on the list of priorities. Plans include an ice storage system for heating and cooling, a PV system for generating electricity and extensive greenery on the roof, façade and outdoor areas. The site has achieved the gold standard of the DGNB certification for sustainable building.
The new Thyssengas-owned operating centre, which replaces the currently rented space on Blitzkuhlenstraße, is thus also a sustainable commitment by the company to the Recklinghausen site.

About Thyssengas:

Thyssengas GmbH is a German transmission system operator. The company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021, is headquartered in Dortmund. Thyssengas operates a gas network around 4,400 kilometres long - mostly in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also with individual pipelines in Lower Saxony. It supplies downstream distribution network operators as well as industrial companies and power plants. Thyssengas is focussing on hydrogen as a gaseous energy source for a climate-neutral future. The Dortmund-based network operator is involved in numerous initiatives to this end. At the same time, it is making targeted investments in the conversion of its pipeline system to enable a rapid hydrogen ramp-up as part of the energy transition. The company currently employs around 460 people at seven locations in the grid area, and the number is growing.
