Rurtal pipeline project: transmission system operator Thyssengas completes the parallelisation of the natural gas pipeline in Düren

In order to be able to guarantee a reliable supply of natural gas to the region even in the face of rising demand, Thyssengas has added a parallel pipeline string to an approximately 2.3 kilometre long section of the Rurtal pipeline in Düren. Today's construction site celebration at the Thyssengas station site marks the completion of the pipeline construction work after 14 months.

The importance of the project for the region was also emphasised by Mayor Frank Peter Ullrich (City of Düren), Raphael Jonas (Managing Director of IHK Aachen) and Franz W. Iven (Head of the Energy Technology, Energy Storage, Heating Infrastructure Department at MWIKE) in their welcoming speeches.

The city of Düren and the companies based in Niederau, Kreuzau and Untermaubach will not only benefit from greater security of supply: as the pipeline is already H2-ready, the region will also gain a hydrogen supply perspective.

During the construction site celebration, Dr Carsten Leder, Head of Sales at Thyssengas, said: "The energy transition presents us, as a transmission system operator, with the task of ensuring a reliable energy supply and at the same time enabling the decarbonisation of industry and SMEs. With the new pipeline, we are helping to make the Düren region fit for the future as an industrial location. The close cooperation with the city and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce was a key success factor for this project."

Frank Rathlev, Head of Operations at Thyssengas, added: "Today we are celebrating the completion of the pipeline construction work. Over the next few days, the final stage will be the completion of the surface restoration work. Pipeline construction projects and the maintenance of a reliable transport network are always a joint effort. We would therefore like to thank everyone involved who contributed to the success of the project."

About Thyssengas

Thyssengas GmbH is a German transmission system operator. The company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021, is headquartered in Dortmund. Thyssengas operates a gas network around 4,400 kilometres long - mostly in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also with individual pipelines in Lower Saxony. It supplies downstream distribution network operators as well as industrial companies and power plants. Thyssengas is focussing on hydrogen as a gaseous energy source for a climate-neutral future. The Dortmund-based network operator is involved in numerous initiatives to this end. At the same time, it is making targeted investments in the conversion of its pipeline system to enable a rapid hydrogen ramp-up as part of the energy transition. The company currently employs around 520 people at seven locations in the grid area, and the number is growing.
