Dortmund-based transmission system operator Thyssengas has published its fourth sustainability report. On around 30 pages, the company describes key developments and measures in 2024 - a year that was characterised by significant progress in the transformation to a climate-neutral gas infrastructure. "In 2024, we took further important steps towards bringing our holistic understanding of sustainability to life - from reducing emissions and our social commitment to actively shaping the energy transition," emphasise Managing Directors Dr Thomas Gößmann and Dr Thomas Becker in the foreword to the report, which has been published under the title "Acting today".
A key event in 2024 was the approval of the hydrogen core network by the Federal Network Agency - a decisive step for the future security of supply of green hydrogen in Germany. "This marks the official start of the implementation of numerous H2 pipeline projects that will give Thyssengas a significant share of the German hydrogen core network - a milestone that we have been working towards for many years," says the management.
At the same time, the company is demonstrating that sustainability and security of supply must go hand in hand. "Flood events at the end of the year have once again made us realise how important the safe operation of the existing natural gas network still is today. We have to do one thing without neglecting the other." The company also launched certification in accordance with DIN EN ISO 14001 and 50001 in order to systematically embed environmental and energy efficiency. Thyssengas also introduced an internal sustainability guideline for the first time in 2024, which formalises the company-wide understanding of sustainability and defines clear responsibilities.
Specific measures were also implemented in the area of emissions avoidance. For example, mobile compressors were procured to significantly reduce methane emissions during maintenance work - a further contribution to the continuous reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and an important element in fulfilling the EU Methane Regulation.
"We remain firmly committed to the goal of enabling a sustainable and secure energy supply. What's more, we are actively realising this goal. Our slogan 'Thinking tomorrow' has therefore become 'Acting today'," said Gößmann and Becker.
