About the project
The Rommerskirchen-Wesseling pipeline system connects the Rhineland to the emerging core hydrogen network. To this end, Thyssengas is converting existing natural gas pipelines for hydrogen transport and linking them via new sections. Through this pipeline system, which is around 50 kilometres long, Thyssengas is securing a hydrogen supply for local industry and small and medium-sized enterprises. To ensure the region continues to receive a reliable supply of natural gas during the transition to hydrogen use, Thyssengas is also planning a new natural gas pipeline from Hoeningen (Rommerskirchen) to Oberaußem (Bergheim). The pipeline will be designed from the outset so that it can also transport hydrogen in the future. Thyssengas is currently preparing the application documents for the spatial compatibility assessment. The aim of the regulatory process is to identify a route corridor that is compatible with the local environment, which will then serve as the basis for further planning of the route. The application documents are scheduled to be submitted to the relevant authorities in August 2026. Find out more about the project at: h2-rommerskirchen-wesseling.de
