Thyssengas has been granted an exemption from the spatial compatibility assessment for its planned Rommerskirchen–Wesseling hydrogen pipeline system

The transmission system operator Thyssengas is exempt from carrying out a spatial compatibility assessment for the planned Rommerskirchen–Wesseling hydrogen pipeline system. The Düsseldorf and Cologne district authorities confirmed this decision at the end of July 2026. The project will now move on to the preparatory stage of the planning approval process.

Waiving the spatial compatibility assessment makes it possible to address regional planning considerations directly within the planning approval procedure. For further planning, a preferred corridor was identified on the basis of a route-finding study and agreed with the regional planning authorities. On this basis, a route is now being developed that is specific to individual plots and the areas affected, and is technically feasible from a construction perspective. In addition, the documentation for the planning approval procedure (PFV) is being prepared.

In April and May, Thyssengas organised public consultation events on the project in Hürth, Pulheim, Wesseling and Bergheim. The feedback gathered there can now be taken into account for the planning approval procedure.

About the project
The Rommerskirchen–Wesseling pipeline system connects the Rhineland to the emerging core hydrogen network. To this end, Thyssengas is converting existing natural gas pipelines for the transport of hydrogen and linking them via newly constructed sections. Through this pipeline system, which is around 45 kilometres long, Thyssengas is securing a hydrogen supply for local industry and small and medium-sized enterprises. To ensure the region continues to receive a reliable supply of natural gas during the transition to hydrogen use, Thyssengas is also planning a new natural gas pipeline from Hoeningen (Rommerskirchen) to Oberaußem (Bergheim). The pipeline will be designed from the outset so that it can also transport hydrogen in the future.
