H2 project information: Thyssengas opens up chemical region in Wesseling with hydrogen pipeline - LyondellBasell uses hydrogen for decarbonisation

Transmission system operator Thyssengas and LyondellBasell (LYB) have signed a contract to connect LYB's Wesseling site to Thyssengas' planned hydrogen pipeline system. Thyssengas is building a 46-kilometre hydrogen pipeline system between Hoeningen near Rommerskirchen and Wesseling as part of the Germany-wide hydrogen core network by 2030 to connect the region and major industrial and SME customers. This connection will provide the LYB plant with an important route for decarbonising its plastics production.

At this year's e-world - Europe's largest energy trade fair - Wilfried Klein, LYB Europe Director of Net Zero Infrastructure & Clusters, Dr Thomas Gößmann, CEO of Thyssengas, and Dr Carsten Leder-Rademacher, Head of Sales at Thyssengas, signed a binding agreement to connect the LYB site in Wesseling to Thyssengas' hydrogen pipeline network.

"As a leader in our industry, we are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our global operations and offering our customers circular and low-carbon solutions," said Wilfried Klein. "Access to hydrogen as an alternative energy source is an important step towards this goal."

Dr Thomas Gößmann emphasised the signal effect of the agreement: "As a transmission system operator, we have been ensuring the reliable supply of gas to the regions and major consumers in North Rhine-Westphalia for over 100 years. The future belongs to hydrogen and other green gases. They enable the decarbonisation of industrial processes and therefore play a key role in achieving climate targets and making business locations more attractive. We are delighted to have gained another strong partner for the hydrogen ramp-up in NRW with LyondellBasell in Wesseling."

About the Hoeningen (Rommerskirchen)-Wesseling H2 pipeline project

By 2030, a 46-kilometre hydrogen pipeline system will be created between Hoeningen near Rommerskirchen and Wesseling through the construction of new pipelines and the conversion of existing natural gas pipelines.

The construction of new hydrogen pipelines is planned between Oberaussem and Weiden, Marsdorf and Stotzheim and between Kalscheuren and Wesseling. The natural gas pipeline between Hoeningen and Oberaussem, which is being built as part of the project, will ensure that the region continues to be reliably supplied with natural gas.

Konrad Gehse, Programme Manager for the Lower Rhine region at Thyssengas, summarises the current project status as follows: "We are currently developing route corridors for the new sections in close cooperation with the authorities and local authorities. Preparations for the spatial impact assessment are running in parallel."

About Thyssengas

Thyssengas GmbH is a German transmission system operator. The company, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2021, is headquartered in Dortmund. Thyssengas operates a gas network around 4,400 kilometres long - mostly in North Rhine-Westphalia, but also with individual pipelines in Lower Saxony. It supplies downstream distribution network operators as well as industrial companies and power plants.

Thyssengas is focussing on hydrogen as a gaseous energy source for a climate-neutral future. The Dortmund-based network operator is involved in numerous initiatives to this end. At the same time, it is making targeted investments in the conversion of its pipeline system in order to ensure a rapid hydrogen

ramp-up as part of the energy transition. The company currently employs around 550 people at seven locations in the grid area, and the number is growing.
